The region
Kourkoumelata is built on top of the hill in the area of Livathos overlooking the Ionian Sea. It is perhaps the most beautiful village of Kefalonia, with a rich maritime tradition distinguished by luxurious villas and beautiful well-kept gardens.
Since ancient times it has offered an escape from the narrow confines of an otherwise isolated island and the only route to hope for prosperity through maritime enterprise.
The village was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake with the wealth gained from maritime activities and demonstrates human effort against the forces of nature. Its calm contrasts with the island’s turbulent history.
